One of life’s great treats is visiting Mexico, a country steeped in
history and culture, a place where old and new meld and where vacation
dreams come true. Once home to the vast empires of the
Incas, Mayans and Aztecs, today Mexico is a diverse nation that offers
something for everyone. It is the 11th most populous
country in the world, a land of 101,000,000 people that covers nearly
1.25 million square miles and touches two oceans.
Talcum powder soft beaches, mesmerizing sunsets, world-class resorts,
archeological treasures, stately European architecture and charming
Colonial towns are just a few of the many reasons that tourists from
all corners of the world make their way here each year. In fact,
20 million visitors come to Mexico annually, making it the seventh most
popular tourist destination in the world.
Nearly any kind of vacation can be found in Mexico. On the Pacific coast, the Baja resort of Cabo San Lucas
attracts fishermen and golfers and is known for its party atmosphere
(as are most Mexico resorts). Further south, Acapulco, undergoing a Renaissance of sorts, still boasts its famous cliff divers and is popular with Spring Breakers. Puerto Vallarta
may be Mexico’s most romantic resort, with palm lined beaches nestled
against a tropical forest. Easy-going Mazatlan is the
country’s oldest resort and continues to inspire with great beaches,
good food and plenty of sun. On the Atlantic coast,
stunning Cancun
earned its sparkling reputation with its endless stretches of silvery
white beaches, first class shopping and five star
hotels. Laid-back Cozumel draws hard-core divers,
families and eco-tourists, and lesser known resort towns such as
Ixtapa, Manzanillo and Guaymas are rapidly coming into their own
as first rate vacation destinations.
But Mexico is not just about sun and sand. Throughout this
beautiful country, reminders of its pre-Colonial past abound, offering
a peek into an ancient world and its people. In fact, Mexico has
more than 13,000 archeological sites, and only a small number of them
have been excavated. The Mayan Rivera,
on the Atlantic coast, is dotted with archeological ruins, some tucked
deep in the jungle, just waiting to be discovered. In Mexico City,
which now sits atop the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, once a
thriving home to 200,000 people, Aztec ruins, including a pyramid, are
still being excavated.
Perhaps one of the best reasons to come to Mexico is to enjoy the
tastes and sites of its wonderful Colonial cities, including San Miguel
de Allende, Taxco and San Luis Potosi. Here, cobblestone
streets, charming shops and narrow walkways evoke an earlier time while
quaint hotels and welcoming restaurants offer a chance to get away from
the hectic pace of modern life.
Whether you are in the mood for great golf, breathtaking beaches,
stunning resorts, splashy spas, adventurous jungle jeep tours,
thrilling whale watching, fascinating eco-tours, amazing archeological
exploration, tasty cuisine, exciting fishing, first rate diving,
fabulous shopping, unbelievable Mexican food
or just soaking up rays, Mexico will not disappoint. It will
inspire and enchant you, and its magic will stay with you long after
you have returned home. |
